Barbizon School, 19th Century Peasant Figure on a Wooded Path Unsigned, inscribed "Diaz" in pencil on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 9 1/2 x 12 5/8 in. (24.0 x 32.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, stable craquelure, minor frame abrasions. Provenance: Nelson C. Holland and Elizabeth Hudson Holland, New York, to Mary H. Ford, through to the current owner by family descent. With a label from The Edgar O. Wardell Art Company, Detroit, on the stretcher. A letter affixed to the frame backing indicates that the painting was restored by William Suhr in New York. Trained in Berlin, William Surh (1896-1984) was a painting conservator who worked at the Detroit Institute of Arts for seven years beginning in 1927, and then at the Frick Collection for over 40 years. He also maintained a private practice. His papers are conserved at the Getty Research Institute.
