William Hart (American, 1823-1894) Horse and Rider Crossing a Woodland Stream Signed and dated "W. Hart 1850" l.c. Oil on canvas, 19 5/8 x 24 1/8 in. (49.8 x 61.4 cm), framed. Condition: Canvas trimmed and laid on paperboard, puncture to u.r. edge, scattered abrasions, craquelure, wear to edges of canvas, surface grime. Pentimento signature and date "W. Hart 1850" barely visible below the primary signature, the primary being in black paint highlighted with red. Puncture to canvas but not to paperboard support located u.r. beneath the frame liner and measuring 1/4 in. diameter. Scattered accretions, including white dots of foreign matter in the sky. Scattered abrasions, mainly to u.l. quadrant around the dead tree, visible in raking light. Stable craquelure overall. Yellowed varnish and surface grime. Canvas trimmed of its tacking edges.
