John Joseph Enneking (American, 1841-1916) Coastal View with Figures Left Signed and dated "Enneking 73" l. r., identified on a catalogue raisonné label from Pierce Galleries, Massachusetts, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 15 7/8 x 20 in. (40.3 x 50.8 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, minor retouch. The canvas has been removed from the stretcher and mounted to a rigid support, possibly aluminum or Masonite, with the canvas tacking edges wrapped around the new support. The new support is covered on the reverse, so it is not possible to determine with certainly what material it is made from. The original stretcher was retained and has been reused to secure the work back in the frame. Retouch scattered throughout the sky, with one larger diagonal line (2 inches long) descending from the top edge, located 7 inches in from the left corner. There are about three dozen pinpoint dots in the sky, with 4 slightly larger dots measuring up to 1/4 inch in diameter. A few scattered brushmarks of retouch to strengthen the dark areas of the rocks beneath and to the left of the standing figures.
