Robert Remsen Vickrey (American, 1926-2011) Old Harbor Life Saving Station Signed "Robert Vickrey" l. l., titled and inscribed on the back of the frame. Tempera on Masonite, 20 x 30 in. (50.7 x 76.0 cm), framed. Condition: Good. N.B. The Old Harbor Life Saving station was built on Nauset Beach in 1897 to house the "surfmen" of the U.S. Lifesaving Service who assisted ships wrecked on Cape Cod's outer beaches. It served in this capacity until it was decommissioned in 1944. When the building itself faced destruction by storm tides, it was relocated in 1977, ingeniously floated by barge to Provincetown. The building stands today in Province Lands (Race Point Beach), where it serves as an education center. No additional condition issues to report.
