Belt, Thomas (1832-1878) The Naturalist in Nicaragua . London: John Murray, 1874. Octavo, first edition, with the frontispiece, "Adventure with a Jaguar," bound in blue publisher's cloth decorated with black and gilt tooled design, with text illustrations, binding somewhat shaken. In this work, Belt describes the mutually beneficial lifestyle between Acacia trees and a species of ant indigenous only to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The lipid-rich pods made by the Acacia tree for the ants are called Beltian bodies in his honor.
