British School, 19th Century Stamford Bull-Running, Lincolnshire, c. 1800 Unsigned, subject identified on a label tacked to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 17 1/8 x 21 1/8 in. (43.7 x 53.3 cm), framed. Condition: Patch reinforcement, probable retouch, craquelure, surface imperfections and grime. N.B. The Stamford Bull-Run was a tradition dating back to the 16th century or earlier, when an enraged bull was driven through the town by men, women, and children, finally captured and slaughtered, and the meat sold at reduced price to the townsfolk as part of the celebration. Reforms to suppress the event were begun in the late 18th century and led to the ending of the custom by about 1840.
