Needlework Sampler, "Mary Ballinger's Work Wrought in The 15th year of her Age in the year 1796," wrought with silk threads on a linen ground with alphabets, pious verses, and family members' names stitched in divided reserves, ornamented with birds, flowers, and butterflies, (toning, fading, stitch losses), 16 1/2 x 15 3/4 in. , in a period mitered wood frame. Provenance: Ex Sally Whittemore collection, sold at Skinner, August 9, 2009, Sale 2468, Lot 131, with auction label affixed l.r. Note: Mary Ballinger was born September 1, 1783, one of seven children born to Zacheus and Hope (nee Lippencott) Ballanger. They lived in Pilesgrove, Salem County, New Jersey. Mary married Joseph Hance (born c. 1779). Mary may have passed away before her father, who died in 1814, as his will, found online, indicates that "Joseph Hance is to have no more of my property, having had his full share of it in his first wife's time, therefore he is to have only sixty seven cents."
