American School, 19th Century "Cambridge Bridge-Boston 1857. " With the Charles St. Jail in the Distance. Unsigned, titled on mat. Watercolor on paper, sight size 11 1/2 x 19 in., in a later molded wood frame. Condition: Light toning. Exhibitions: Boston 1630-1872, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, October 26 to December 5, 1943, with exhibition loan label affixed to the backing paper. Note: This watercolor appears to have been based on a wood engraving that appeared in Gleason's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion (July 19, 1851, page 48) entitled "View of Cambridge Bridge, Foot of Cambridge Street, Boston." It is interesting to note that the Cambridge Bridge, also known in its time as the West Bridge, has since been demolished and replaced by the Longfellow Bridge. We are grateful to Catharina Slautterback, Curator of Prints & Photographs at the Boston Athenaeum, for her help in cataloging this work.
