Sea Captain's Writing Box, America, late 19th century, the rectangular bird's-eye maple box with hinged lid, brass swing handles, and a side drawer with compartments, the interior with velvet-covered writing surface, storage cavities, and compartments for ink and writing utensils, (shrinkage cracks on lid), ht. 8, wd. 22, dp. 10 5/8 in. Note: This box reportedly belonged to Captain Samuel P. Smith of Edgartown, Massachusetts, according to inscriptions on an envelope with a clipping of a small news article about the captain.
