Painted Armed Rocking Chair, northern New England, 19th century, the turned finials above tapering posts and four shaped slats with tapered turned arms on turned supports, old surface, (imperfections), ht. 45 3/4, seat ht. 16 1/2 in. Literature: The Impecunious Collector's Guide to American Antiques , by John T. Kirk, Knopf, 1975, fig. 23, pp. 34-35; Early American Furniture , by John T. Kirk, Knopf, 1974, 232. In The Impecunious Collector's Guide , Kirk discusses the chair's pleasing color caused by the application of light gray paint over later blue over the original red, a surface shared by the rockers as well.
