Red-painted Wooden Hanging Pipe Box, America, late 18th/early 19th century, with pierced shaped backboard, shaped side and front panels, over a single dovetail-constructed drawer with brass knob, appears to have original dark red paint, containing four clay pipes, (minor losses), ht. 19 1/8, wd. 6, dp. 5 in. Provenance: According to a 1977 letter from a Palisades, New York, auctioneer, found in the drawer, the pipe box came from the Westervelt/Kipp families of New York City, Bergen County, Long Island, and in the early 20th century, was hung in the Kipp house, Fishkill, New York.
