Attributed to John Ramage (New York, 1748-1802) Portrait Miniature of Frederick Jay, c. 1795. Unsigned, the sitter identified on a label affixed to the back of the frame: "Frederick Jay b. 1747/brother of Peter Jay (blind) and of John Jay." Watercolor on ivory, 1 7/8 x 1 5/8 in., in a later lacquered composition frame. Condition: Very good. Provenance: Descended in the Jay family. Note: Frederick Jay was born into to a wealthy family of merchants and government officials in New York City. He was one of ten children of Peter (b. 1704) and Mary (Van Cortlandt) Jay, and younger brother to John Jay (1745-1829), who was an American statesman, patriot, diplomat, Founding Father of the United States, signer of the Treaty of Paris, and the first Chief Justice of the United States (1789-95).
