After William Carnes (American, fl. c. 1810-1830) "The Massacre of the American Prisoners of War at Dartmoor Prison," 1815, engraved by George G. Smith, Salem, Massachusetts (Stauffer 2911). Titled and credited below image within plate. Engraving with hand color on paper, 12 7/8 x 11 in. (image, title, and credits), 15 3/4 x 12 in. (sheet size), in period gilt molded frame. Condition: Toned and creased from old folds, very small losses along fold corners; a few tears at edges, none extending into image. Note: Throughout the war of 1812, American prisoners, mostly naval, were held in Dartmoor Prison in England. In April 1815, a suspected insurrection among prisoners was put down violently, killing seven and wounding as many as sixty. The event, which took place after the Treaty of Ghent had been ratified and prisoners had been slated for repatriation, met with strong and indignant reaction in the United States and was written up in newspapers and illustrated with broadsides. Engraved after a drawing by W. Carnes, this broadside was published by George G. Smith in Salem, home to many of the naval prisoners held at Dartmoor.
