Johann Robert Schürch (Swiss, 1895-1941) Café Scene Signed and dated "Schürch 27" in ink l. r., stamped "NIERENDORF GALLERY N.Y.C." inscribed "G ZU 1021" in pencil on the reverse. Ink and watercolor on paper, 9 1/2 x 13 1/8 in. (24.1 x 33.3 cm), matted, unframed. Condition: Tape hinged to backing, tack holes to corners, deckled edges. N.B. After World War I, Schürch was encouraged by the Swiss Expressionist Ferdinand Hodler to study art in Geneva. There he attended the École des Beaux-Arts, and apprenticed in Hodler's atelier. Born into modest means, Schürch was fascinated with depicting social outcasts and the destitute, as well as exploring themes of isolation and alienation. Schürch succumbed to tuberculosis in 1941.
