Max Beckmann (German, 1884-1950) Butshy , 1945 Signed and dated "Beckmann A[msterdam]. 45" in pen l.r., numbered "36.307" in pencil on the reverse, identified on a label from Frankfurter Kunstverein Steinernes Haus, Frankfurt, Germany, affixed to the backing. Ink and graphite on laid paper, 19 5/8 x 11 1/4 in. (50.0 x 28.5 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered small mended tears/losses to edges, small abrasion or thinning to paper at l.l., subtle toning, tape-hinged to back mat at two places at the top edge of the reverse. Provenance: The artist to his wife Mathilde Q. Beckmann, New York, New York, by inheritance (c. 1950-1968); gift to former Smith College zoology instructor Elizabeth Abbot Copeland (d. 1999), Sherbourne, Massachusetts.
