Philip Leslie Hale (American, 1865-1931) Study for Self-Portrait Unsigned, identified on a label from the Fraad Collection (see below) affixed to the reverse. Charcoal on canvas, 30 x 25 1/4 in. (76.2 x 64.1 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: Rippling to u.r. and u.l. corners. Provenance: Vose Galleries of Boston, 1966; Sotheby's New York, American Paintings from the Collection of Rita and Daniel Fraad, December 1, 2004, Sale 8032, Lot 72. N.B. The present work is a study for the artist's self-portrait in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, permanent collection. The finished oil on canvas painting, which depicts Hale holding brushes and his palette, was gifted to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1931 by his wife, artist Lilian Westcott Hale.
