Norman Carton (American, 1908-1980) Orpheus Signed "Carton" l. l., also signed and inscribed "Carton 1035" on the reverse, identified on a label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 39 1/2 x 32 in. (100.3 x 81.3 cm), framed. Condition: Alligatoring, surface grime. N.B. In a letter dated March 26, 1962 from Carton to a previous owner, he notes that the present work was painted in Provincetown and described it as "a favorite of mine. A crescendo of intense color saturation." A copy of the letter accompanies the lot.
