William Makepeace Thackeray (British, 1811-1863) Queen Charlotte with George IV on her Lap Initialed "W. M.T." in pencil l.l., inscribed "Original Sketch/George IV and Queen Charlotte" in ink in the mat beneath the image, identified on a label affixed to the frame backing paper. Pencil on paper, sight size 4 7/8 x 3 in. (12.5 x 7.5 cm), framed. Condition: Fold across lower quarter of the sheet, not examined out of frame. N.B. Unattributed labels on the frame backing paper state that this pencil drawing appeared as an initial letter in Cornhill Magazine, October 1860, p. 385, as well as in a reduced form in the article, "George the Fourth," 1861, pl. 167. William Makepeace Thackeray was the editor of Cornhill Magazine from 1860 to 1862. Comparing the drawing at hand with the published image in the 1860 magazine, it appears that the work at hand is an preliminary sketch, showing greater refinement in some areas and less detail in other areas. Two other unattributed labels also provide a partial provenance for the work, as follows: "Acquired by Hearst at Anderson Gallery, 2/6-7/22 from Coll. of H.S. Van Duzer. Purchased by P.HB from Hearst Collection, Cat...#259..., thru Hammer Galleries, Gimbel Bros. Feb. 3, ..."
