Two Satsuma Covered Jars, Japan, 19th century, square, the sides slightly tapering towards the bottom, resting on four bracket feet, each side depicting legendary scenes with figures painted in gold and enamel with some carved in high relief, the cover of flattened dome shape with a knob in the shape of a daiko drum, both signed "Hododa" with Shimazu family crest on a red cartouche to base, one of the bases with additional floral scroll decoration in gold, ht. to 14 1/8 in.
