Photo Album, Middle Eastern Subjects, c. 1900. Commercially produced folio-format album, containing more than 100 photographs produced for the tourist trade, each approximately 8 x 10 in., mostly albumen prints, a minority at the end of the album black and white process, most by Félix Bonfils (1831-1885), others by Hippolyte Arnoux (active c. 1860-c. 1890), and eleven by Alexandre Leroux (1836-1912), subjects include individual portraits of Middle Easterners, including a Turkish guide, an Algerian shoe shine boy, Bedouins, a blind Dervish, and several individual shots of women; other photographs feature street scenes, and shots of daily life, including an Algerian coffee house, water carriers, Syrian mosaic makers, musicians, dancers, and others; monuments, buildings and ruins in Turkey, Syria, Cyprus, Egypt, andAlgeria are also present, along with several shots of the pyramids, the sphinx, a mummy, and related Ancient Egyptian subjects; pages rumpled, photos mounted back-to-back on album sheets, making the text block thicker than the spine, front board almost completely detached, endleaves loose, 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.
