Shaker Birch and Pine Table, Alfred, Maine, c. 1830, oval overhanging top on square and tapering turned legs, ending in button feet, refinished, (minor imperfections), ht. 26 3/4, top 30 x 22 1/2 in. Literature: Shaker Furniture: The Craftsmanship of an American Communal Sect , plate 9; Gather Up the Fragments , p. 139. Exhibitions: Shaker Exhibition, Berkshire Museum, October 1932. The Andrewses acquired this table as Alfred was closing in 1931. The top is pine, and the skirt and legs are birch. Note the turning of the foot, it is quite similar to other Alfred drop-leaf tables. In Shaker Furniture, the Andrewses note, "The oval topped table was one of several used in a sister's shop at Alfred."
