Carved and Inscribed Bamboo Brush Pot, China, 19th/20th century, depicts a scholar's retreat by a thundering waterfall, inscription reads: "I tell my student, 'the river is singing. ' He goes and looks and says, 'the moon and star are very clear, but I hear no song.' I answer him, 'once you have experienced more of life and its sorrows, you will hear the river singing to you.'"
