Model 1853/55 Knapsack and Model 1858 Canteen of Lemuel E. Elston, 124th New York Infantry, c. 1861-65, black painted canvas knapsack with leather straps, white painted marking on front L.E.E. CO. F/124 N.Y.S.V. , and on inside L.E. ELSTON/PORT.JERVIS/124/CO. F/N.Y.S.V. N.Y , smoothside canteen with coarse brown cloth covering, marked in white paint on one side L.E.E./CO. F , and on the other CO. F./124.N.Y. , pewter spout marked L.E.E. CO. F , with twill woven cotton sling. Provenance: Sold to benefit the acquisition fund of the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College. Note: Lemuel Elston was a member of the "Orange Blossoms" fighting in the battles of Manassas, Bull Run, and Gettysburg. He was captured and imprisoned at Andersonville, Georgia.
