Gruppe" l.l., identified on an exhibition label from Allied Artists of America, Inc., New York (see below), affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 40 x 54 in. (101.5 x 137.2 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Surface grime. Provenance: Ex-collection of Mr. Alvah Strong, Rochester, New York. Exhibitions: Allied Artists of America, Inc., 15th Annual Exhibition (1928), New York. N.B. The lot is accompanied by an exhibition announcement for a Charles P. Gruppe show at The Broadhead Galleries, Rochester, New York, inscribed with a personal note from the artist to Mr. Alvah Strong. The original owner of the painting at hand, Strong lived in Rochester and was the first President of The Eastman Kodak Company. It is thought that the Bass Rocks painting listed on the exhibition announcement corresponds to the work presented here.
