Attributed to Erastus Salisbury Field (American, 1805-1900) Portrait of a Woman Wearing a Lacy Bonnet and Holding a Flowered Purse. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 35 x 29 in., in a giltwood liner. Condition: Minor paint loss to background u.r., stable craquelure. Note: This painting reflects some of the characteristics that Erastus Field is well known for, such as the gray, cloud-like background, the use of black dots to portray lace patterns, a stiff frontal pose, the figures with a short waist and narrow shoulders, and knuckles suggested with dots of pink and flesh-colored pigments.
