Attributed to Samuel Lovett Waldo (American, 1783-1861) Pair of Portraits of General Jonas Mapes and Elizabeth (Tylee) Mapes. Unsigned, subjects identified on brass plaques below. Oil on panel, 38 x 23 3/4 in., in matching ornate gilt-gesso frames. Condition: Retouch primarily to portrait of Elizabeth, both portraits cleaned and varnished. Note: General Jonas Mapes was bom in Southold, Long Island, September 6, 1768. He was the son of James Deliverance Hawkins Mapes. He was commissioned as ensign in New York, October 15, 1794, and rose in rank to major general in command of the New York State troops. Mapes founded the Savings Bank on Bleeker Street in New York City and was instrumental in the establishment of the New York Institute for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb, which incorporated in 1817. He was senior partner of the import and tailoring firm of Mapes & Son of New York City. He married Elizabeth Tylee of New York City on October 12 1796, and had four children. He died in New York City on July 10, 1827.
