Chippendale Mahogany Carved Tilt-top Tea Table, 18th century, the circular molded piecrust top on a birdcage platform, and acanthus-carved, punchwork-decorated, turned and fluted post on a tripod cabriole leg base with scroll and acanthus-carved knees, all on elongated claw-and-ball feet, (imperfections), ht. 28, dia. 35 in. Provenance: Reportedly bought by C.C. Hedrick, textile mill engineer, of Lowell, Massachusetts, c. 1910. Then to Norwalk, Connecticut, antiques dealer John Kenneth Byard, who sold it twice - first to pioneer collector Ellerton M. Jette, and then to I. Austin Kelly of MIT in 1954, in whose family it has descended since.
