Embroidered and Painted Silk Mourning Picture: "Sacred to the Memory of the Illustrious Washington," probably Philadelphia, c. 1807, worked in silk threads and chenille on a silk ground with painted faces and details, oval picture depicting a landscape with a weeping willow and two other trees and two young women and a young girl beside a monument, surmounted with an urn inscribed "GW," the monument is inscribed "SACRED to the MEMORY of the Illustrious WASHINGTON," one woman leans in grief upon the monument while the other woman adorns the monument with a garland of flowers, (toning), 16 x 19 3/4 in., in an oval molded gold-painted frame. Note: A similarly composed Washington mourning picture was formerly in the Betty Ring collection, and was sold with her collection at Sotheby's, Sale 8832, Lot 630, January 22, 2012. Another was apparently a part of the H. Eugene Bolles collection gift to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
