Silk Needlework Mourning Picture, America, c. 1805, executed in silk embroidery threads on a silk foundation with painted heads and arms on the figures, depicting a crypt with two ladies dressed in classical gowns mourning beside a large monument topped with an obelisk and an urn inscribed "They Rest in Hope," the monument with a leaf-bordered oval reserve inscribed with the names, ages, and death dates of the deceased: "Sacred to the Memories of Four Brothers & One Sister...," the dates ranging from 1795 to 1802, and "Inscribed By Their Sister Char'l; White," on a checkered floor, (minor stains to background u.r.), 16 1/2 x 19 1/2 in., in original molded giltwood frame with eglomise mat with two gilt trumpeting angels above the tableau, and conforming gilt columns and arch.
