Floral Fabric Applique Covered Box, attributed to George Lawton, Sr. , (1813-1885), Rhode Island, 1839, rectangular wooden box covered with paper decorated with applied artfully arranged cutout printed floral fabric segments, bordered with applied printed paper borders, the back of the box with applied cut-out printed text fragments reading: "C.C. LAWTON/MARCH THE 5 AD 1839/NO 1," with remains of old leather hinges, ht. 3, wd. 4, dp. 3 1/8 in. This box is described as the earliest known box attributed to George Lawton, Sr., "based on the name [C.C.
