Wool and Cotton Patriotic and Floral Theme Coverlet, woven by Archibald Davidson, Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York, 1835, two-piece, double weave, navy blue wool and natural cotton coverlet depicting a central field of rose and thistle medallions, two of the sides with floral and foliate borders, the end border with eagles and shields over prancing horses, two corner blocks with woven inscriptions: "ELSY BAGLEY/LIBER-TY. & INDEPE/NDANC-E/ITHACA/1835/A./DAVIDSON/FANCY/WEAVER.," fringed on three sides, (toning, minor scattered losses), 88 x 79 in. Literature: This coverlet is pictured in Coverlets and the Spirit of America , by Melinda Zongor (Pennsylvania: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 2002), pp. 32-33. Zongor writes: "Archibald Davidson's prominent use of the thistle indicates his Scottish heritage, as does the double weave structure."
