Red and White Woven Wool and Cotton Coverlet, woven by Harry Tyler, 1801-c. 1858, Butterville, Jefferson County, New York, 1839, two-piece, double weave coverlet woven of red wool and natural cotton with a central field of stars and floral medallions, bordered on three sides with leafy fruiting trees and fences, the bottom border with inscriptions "JEFFERSON CO." and "JEFFERSON CO. N.Y," two corner blocks featuring Harry Tyler's early trademark lion figure with woven inscription "PATIENCE ELY/EMILY ELY/1839,"minor toning, light stains, and loss), approx. 89 x 81 in. Literature: This coverlet is pictured in Coverlets and the Spirit of America , Melinda Zongor (Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., Pennsylvania, 2002), pp. 68-9. Zongor writes: "Tyler is known for the unique variety of his patterns and the quality of his colors. His work is a perfect study of pattern, which changed and evolved with the fashion of the day."
