Silver "Claude" Pendant, Pablo Picasso, depicting the young Claude in profile, lg. 2 in., unsigned. Lots 184-186 were made by Picasso in the 1950s. They were in the collection of Francoise Gilot, mother of Claude and Paloma Picasso. In the book Life With Picasso by Francoise Gilot and Carlton Lake, Gilot describes how Picasso, with the help of Dr. Chatagnier, a Vallauris dentist, made gold and silver jewelry through the lost wax process. She says "In all Pablo made about ten necklaces with the help of Doctor Chatagnier.....Two of the others bore portraits of Claude and Paloma on silver and one was a sun in silver...I thought they were all very nice except one, a rather heavy head of a satyr, in silver". Gilot gifted the following three pendants to Carole Mallory, then Claude Picasso's fiance, in 1970's. They have been in Ms. Mallory's possession until now.
