American School, 19th Century Portrait of Sir Richard Saltonstall (1586-1658). Unsigned, the subject's name and dated carved into the lower stretcher bar and with a canvas stamp from M.J. Whipple's Artists Supply Store, 35 Cornhill, Boston, on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 30 x 23 in., framed. N.B. A native of England, Sir Richard Saltonstall led a group of English settlers up the Charles River to settle in what is now Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1630. Due to illness, he and his family returned to England in 1631. In 1644, he was appointed ambassador to Holland, where his portrait was painted by Rembrandt. The Massachusetts Historical Society owns a similar but larger portrait of Saltonstall, by Charles Osgood dated 1858.
