Neapolitan School, 19th/20th Century Bronze of Pan and the Goat, After the Antique, signed "Jabalino Napes" to base, ht. 14 in. N.B. The marble sculpture that this bronze is modeled after was discovered in 1752, during excavations at the Villa of the Papyrus in Herculaneum. Once discovered Pan and the Goat was quickly locked away in a chest by the Bourbon King Charles III. Today it is housed in National Archaeological Museum of Naples in the "Secret Cabinet", which houses the more explicit ancient artifacts in the collection.
