Kirk & Son .917 Silver New York Yacht Club Trophy, Baltimore, Maryland, c. 1853, the slender, baluster pitcher decorated throughout with buildings amongst various flowers and foliage, and ram's head on the handle, raised on a flared circular foot, the body with a cartouche with the presentation engraving: "New York Yacht Club/3rd Class Prize 1st Day./Awarded to/Yacht Alpha/Regatta of 1853," ht. 16 in., approx. 43.8 troy oz. N.B. The Third Class Prize was for vessels twenty-five tons and under. The sloop Alpha was seventeen tons and owned by R.R. Morris. An article from The New York Clipper , "Sports Intelligence" section from June 11, 1853 chronicles the race, and a copy of this article accompanies the lot.
