British School, 19th Century Portrait of an Officer, Thought to be Captain Thomas James Unsigned, sitter identified on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 16 x 13 in. (40.8 x 33.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure with areas of tenting, surface grime. N.B. The uniform appears to be that of an English artillery officer of the Napoleonic era in the early years of the 19th century. The suggested name of the sitter, Captain Thomas James, conjers the 17th-century explorer who sought a northwest passage into the South Sea, but the costume contradicts this interpretation.
