Copper Measure, America, late 18th/early 19th century, the tapered cylindrical body with flared rim and molded handle, marked "B" twice and "CONDEMNE" four times below rim, ht. 8 1/2, dia. 5 3/4 in. Note: This measure, along with lot 69 in this sale, was pictured in the August 2008 issue of New England Antiques Journal, where the caption pointed out the rarity of its condemned status (meaning that it failed inspection for official use). Usually, the caption states, such measures were destroyed, but this one survived, presumably with some other use. The twice-stamped "B" indicates Boston.
