Bronze Posnet, Gay & Hunneman, 1792-99, Boston, the vessel on three feet, the handle marked "GAY & HUNNEMAN Boston," lg. 19 3/4, dia. 8 3/4 in. Note: In his collection notes Howard Roth writes of the founders, "Robert Gay was a trained brass founder who lived in Boston and became a Tory during the War for Independence. He fled to Nova Scotia in 1776 and moved to England. He changed his attitude after the War's end and moved back to Boston. Gay formed a partnership with William C. Hunneman, a former apprentice to Paul Revere and set up 19 Union Street in the city of Boston. They worked together until 1799 when they mutually decided to pursue their craft of coppersmithing and brazing separately."
