Bronze Posnet, Lawrence Langworthy, Newport, Rhode Island, c. 1730, the vessel on three feet, the handle marked "L. LANGWORTHY 1730," (imperfections), lg. 16 3/4, dia. 7 1/4 in. Note: In his collection notes Howard Roth points out that the blunt end handle on this example is typical of Newport posnets. For two similar examples in the Winterthur collection, see Fennimore, Metalwork in Early America, p. 70. Of this and other early Newport posnets in his collection, Mr. Roth writes "Although bronze is described as principally copper and ... tin, these examples are ... approximately 78% copper with varying percentages of ... lead, tin and zinc and very minor amounts of silver and antimony probably incorporated into the casting by being part of the impure copper as found but not completely purged."
