Portrait of Abigail Seward, American School, c. 1840, the sitter wears a lace shawl, seated on a classical sofa, oil on canvas, in gilt-gesso frame, (relined), 30 x 25 in. Provenance: Seward Estate, Pomfret, Vermont, to the estate of Paul Oppenheimer, former Chairman of the New England Antiquarian Society. Note: The sitter is probably the mother of William H. Seward, Secretary of State in the Lincoln Administration.
