Carved and Painted Eagle, Joseph Romuald Bernier, Biddeford, Maine, late 19th/early 20th century, the eagle with outstretched wings and raised head perched on a log, circular sawtooth base, original surface, ht. 1 1/2, wd. 34, dp. 22 in. Note: Joseph Romuald Bernier, also known as 'Bernier the Lumberman,' immigrated to Biddeford in the 1890s, and turned to wood carving in the 1930s as a new profession after he lost the use of his legs in the 1920s in a lumbering accident.
