Cast Iron Red-painted Pot, America, c. 1801, the vessel with gate mark, bail handle, on three feet and with cast decoration: "POLLEY BATES" and two floral sprigs on one side, "MANSFD. 1801 Z.L." on the other side, with old red paint, ht. 5 1/2, dia. 7 3/4 in. Note: In his research notes Howard Roth included a passage from Representative Men and Old Families of Southeastern Massachusetts (Chicago: J.H. Beers & Co., 1912), which mentions a Polly Bates likely associated with this pot: "Solomon Pratt, born Feb. 26, 1771, married May 19 1803 Polly Bates, of Mansfield... Mr. Pratt was very prominent among the business men of Manfield. He possessed unusual business capacity, owned largely of real estate, and was in his day the most active and industrious man in the town... Mr. Pratt, too, was engaged in the iron business."
