Attributed to William Powell Frith (British, 1819-1909) Mother and Daughter Winding Embroidery Thread in an Interior. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 21 x 14 3/8 in., framed. Condition: Lined, craquelure, probable old retouch, surface grime. N.B. The lot is accompanied by a letter dated May 20, 1963, from Richard S. Carroll, then the Assistant Director of the Columbia Museum of Art (South Carolina), describing conservation work that was done on the painting at hand. Carroll's letter suggests that a later signature, which was on top of a "gesso plug," was removed by the museum at the time of restoration in 1963. He surmised that the later signature had replaced a prior, earlier signature by Frith, and that "...in all probability the original signature was lost in this previous restoration and was replaced at that time." The date and place of the earlier restoration are not known.
