Attributed to Max Haufler (Swiss, 1910-1965) Cubist Drawing of Woman by a Window . Signed "Haufler '49" l.c. Crayon on paper, 19 x 11 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Framed with acidic mat and cardboard, paper has been stapled to heavy paper, the backing cardboard bears a shipping label addressed to Mr. Samuel Oshiver, a Philadelphia architect. Note: Max Haufler, born in Basel, Switzerland, was one of the most famous Swiss actors and the first to go to Hollywood. He originally trained as a painter, but in 1936, he began acting. In 1962, Orson Welles cast Haufler in "Le proces/The Trial," and in 1965 he appeared in Bernhard Wicki's "Morituri" with Marlon Brando and Yul Brynner. Haufler directed nine feature-length movies between 1937 and 1950.
