Blue Silk Gauze Dragon Robe, China, 19th century, woven with eight dragons across the front, back, and shoulders, each with five claws and chasing a flaming pearl, surrounded by an allover cloud pattern interspersed with cranes, bats, and Buddhist emblems, all above a lishui and ruyi -cloud border at the skirt, with bands of dragons at the neckline and horseshoe-shaped sleeves, lg. 51 1/2 in. Provenance: Purchased in Beijing at the turn of the century when the current owner's grandmother was stationed at the Princeton University Alumni organized YMCA outpost, as reported in The Princeton Alumni Weekly , Vol. XIV No. 18, February 11, 1914.
