Pair of White Cloisonne Caparisoned Elephants, China, 18th century, each standing with its head turned to the side, trunk curled upward, the white body stippled with gilt dots, the back adorned with a saddle cloth, on which is a saddle with a baluster-shape covered vase with two ribbon handles, all adornments decorated with lotus scrolls and auspicious symbols in polychrome enamels over a blue or red ground, ht. 14, wd. 12 1/4 in. Provenance: Acquired from an antique store on Martha's Vinyard in 1969, with bill of sale.
