Delaware Valley Chippendale mahogany secretary desk, ca. 1780 , in two parts, the upper section with a swan's neck pediment centering on a carved rooster finial, above two lattice paneled doors flanked by incise decorated quarter columns, resting on a base with a slant lid enclosing an interior with a lattice carved prospect door, incise decorated document drawers and small drawers and pigeon holes below a fan, volute, and punch decorated frieze, above four lower drawers flanked by decorated quarrter columns, all resting on bold ogee bracket feet, 83 1/2" h. (minor repairs). Descended in the Phelps family of Wilmington, Delaware. An almost identicle example of this rare form is located in the Henry Ford Museum.
