Aaron Siskind (American, 1903-1991) Gloucester 1H , 1944, printed later. Signed "Aaron Siskind" in black ink below the image l.r., titled and dated in black ink below the image l.l. Gelatin silver print, 18 1/4 x 13 1/2 in. (46.3 x 34.3 cm), matted, unframed. Condition: Good, hinged at upper corners. Provenance: From the artist to the current owner. N.B. In the early 1940s, Aaron Siskind, who had been working in a social documentary mode represented by images such as the previous untitled work from The Most Crowded Block (lot 162), began to make abstract, metaphorical images of found objects like driftwood and the glove depicted here. Gloucester 1H is a key work reflecting this shift and demonstrates what Siskind described as combining the intuitive impulse of surrealism with the formal rigor of composition and scale.
