In 1936 at the young age of 21, Arthur Rothstein was the first photographer hired by Roy Stryker of the federal government's Resettlement Administration to document the effects of the Great Depression on struggling families, as well as that agency's efforts to alleviate the economic problems facing the nation. He photographed Artelia Bendolph in Alabama in 1937, creating one of his most iconic images. Always conscious of photography as a vehicle for social commentary, Rothstein captures Bendolph's economic circumstances by juxtaposing her with a bountiful food advertisement in a newspaper used to insulate the cabin from the cold.
